| Former Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie has been a big part in helping develop Tech's new quarterbacks while picking up a few things himself. |

Official Sports Report: August 25, 2009 CUMBIE GETTING COMFY WITH NEW ROLE AT TECH Former Tech quarterback returns at perfect time |
by Travis Cram, Managing Editor
Sonny Cumbie has finally come home.
After spending several years in the Arena Football League, the former Texas Tech quarterback is getting a feel for his new position in Tech head coach Mike Leach's offense — serving as a graduate assistant for the Red Raiders this season.
"It's been great to be back at Texas Tech and back in Lubbock in a place I call home, around family and everyone else," said Cumbie, who is originally from nearby Snyder, Texas, about 85 miles southeast of Lubbock. "It's a real fortunate opportunity for me to be able to work here and learn as much as I can from coach Leach and just get my foot in the door in the coaching world."
Leach appreciates what Cumbie is able to bring back to Tech in helping the team out this season.
"He's a sharp guy," Leach said of his former quarterback. "He's a real asset, real sharp and he's able to take care of some of the details when I may be preoccupied with something else."
And it maybe could not have been timed any better by Tech or Cumbie to be working with this offense at this exact moment. Because redshirt junior quarterback Taylor Potts is preparing to take over the Tech offense in the first year after Graham Harrell's record breaking season in which all he did was become the first quarterback in Football Bowl Subdivision history to throw for back-to-back 5,000-yard season and an NCAA-record 134 touchdown passes.
Cumbie remembers that same feeling.
He was the one picked to succeed B.J. Symons after the 2003 season, where Symons passed for 5,883 yards total in 13 games — an NCAA record that shattered Ty Detmer's 5,188 yards set in 1990 at BYU. He also led Tech to a win in the Houston Bowl over Navy.
"His experience out there is what means the most to me," Potts said of Cumbie — who also wore No. 15 at Tech. "It's nice to be able to ask him a question because he's been in those situations and he's ran this offense and been around coach (Leach).
"He's been in this position before in fall camp, waiting to make that first start. So he knows what I'm going through and has the advice to give me that helps me out as a quarterback."
Cumbie followed the Symons show with an encore that few Tech fans will ever forget, perhaps making some of the most significant progress in helping Tech extend its recruiting and legacy with the Air Raid offense.
Tech went 7-4 during the regular season while Cumbie became the third Red Raider quarterback to lead the nation in passing with 4,772 yards and get a bid to play in the Holiday Bowl against then-No. 4 California.
Tech stunned the Golden Bears, 45-31, as Cumbie completed 39 of 60 passes for 520 yards and three touchdowns — breaking his own Detmer record for most passes attempted in a Holiday Bowl game while earning MVP honors.
Now everything seems to have come full circle for Cumbie as he prepares Potts for his season debut against North Dakota on Sept. 5.
"I think the biggest thing with Taylor right now is you don't want to put too many things in his head. I'm really trying to observe and see how he's handling certain things in pressure situations, is he making the right reads and decisions and how I can help him to understand things better. But so far he's doing a great job on his own."
